The word
"novena" comes from the Latin word "Novem" which means "Nine" and a
Novena is usually said for nine consecutive days. This was also the
period of time that the apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary prayed
before the descent of the Holy Spirit. Nine bead chaplets or Novena
chaplets as they are called, consists of 3 sets of 3 beads on which 1
Our Father, 1 Hail Mary and 1 Glory be are recited on each set. The
Creed is recited on the crucifix and special prayers on the terminating
medal. Prayers offered using the chaplet are intercessory prayers in
honor of specific persons of the Holy Trinity, or the Blessed Virgin
Mary or of saints from whom intercession is sought. Although prayers can
be said anytime, it is traditionally said for 9 nine days before their
respective feast days. Novena chaplets are a great way of integrating
prayer into our busy modern everyday schedules and lives.

Our Lady of
Olives

The medal of
Our Lady of Olives originated in France and is well known throughout the
Church. The original image of Our Lady was a wooden statue that survived
destruction of the Church of Murat in Cantal, France caused by a
lightning strike. This incident occurred in 1493 and was the beginning
of the devotion to Our Lady of Olives. According to tradition, it is
believed that anyone who carried the medal is preserved from lightning
whenever there is a storm or in open places as she is the protectress
against lightning. Another privilege is that Our Lady of Olives protects
women who are mothers-to-be and assists them in childbirth. It is also
believed that the colour of Our Lady's mantle at Murat is green rather
than the usual blue and white. Her feast day is celebrated on the first
Sunday every September.

The Divino
Nino devotion, also know as the Divine Child Jesus originates from a
wooden statue of the Child Jesus in Bogata, Columbia. It is one of the
most popular religious images in Columbia, especially among Roman
Catholics. Tradition has it that a priest by the name of Father Giovanni
Rizzo while praying to Our Lady of Christian Help, the Child Jesus in
the Virgin Mary's arms spoke to him in outstretched arms.
Surprisingly later, he came across a statue of the Child Jesus in a shop
in exactly the same posture as he saw Him in his vision. He than bought
the statue and brought it with him to a small chapel which he helped to
successfully build. Soon, many miracles and prodigies began to be
reported among the faithful. The feast day of Divino Nino is celebrated
on 3 September each year.
